90 YEARS OF NEUTRON MODERATION
From Fermi’s experiments to modern applications
16 November 2026
The School of Neutron Scattering, in collaboration with the Centro Ricerche Enrico Fermi, is organizing an event to celebrate 90 years since one of the most relevant articles by Enrico Fermi about the scattering of neutrons in hydrogenated materials. Topics discussed during the event will cover applications of neutron moderation that impact on a variety of scientific cases, and that require a continuous development of models and materials. These include, inter alia, medical physics, applications to Cultural Heritage, monitoring of Space Weather, energy, and materials characterizations.
The event is expected to be the meeting point amongst representatives of a heterogeneous community having the topic of neutron moderation as a contact point. The event aims to be the seed for the organization of a neutron school of moderation in Rome, where 90 year ago much of the related discoveries and experiments happened, in the fascinating venue of Via Panisperna.
At present, a list of speakers include
- Angela Bracco, (President of Centro Ricerche Enrico Fermi)
- Marco Zanatta (President of the Italian Society of Neutron Sciences, University of Trento)
- Daniela Di Martino,(University of Milano Bicocca)
- Fabio Bruni (University of Roma 3)
- Silva Bortolussi (University of Pavia)
- Luca Falconi (ENEA)
- Monica Laurenza (INAF)
- Roberto Bedogni (INFN)
The event will take place between 10:00 and 17:00 of the 16th of November 2026 at the Centro Ricerche Enrico Fermi, and a visit to the Museum of CREF will be possible afterwards.
A registration link will be available sson.
