Directors: Francesco Aliotta (CNR) and Roberto Triolo (Università degli Studi di Palermo), 21th September – 2nd October 2004, School edition held at the HOTEL CAPO D’ORSO Palau (Italy).

The School focuses on the current methodology of static and dynamic neutron scattering techniques to scientists using scattering methods at large scale facilities. Central themes of the  School was the application of Small Angle and Ultra Small Angle Scattering techniques, as well as  information on recent application and developments providing a broader understanding of scattering methods and their application for resolving structural and dynamic problems. Participants are selected for the course based on their need to utilize X-rays and Neutrons interactions with Matter as part of their present and/or future research activities. Preference is given to early stage researchers (typically between 25 and 30 years old) from neutron facilities, universities or other research institutions but more experienced researchers are also welcome to apply. The school was sponsored by CNR, INFM, SISN, Università di Roma Tre, Università di Roma Tor Vergata, Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca, Notiziario Neutroni e Luce di sincrotrone.

WORKSHOPS

2017 – Neutrons Matter – VII Workshop on Electron Volt Neutron Spectroscopy

The Neutrons Matter workshop took place on the 7th – 8th November 2017, at Villa Wolkonsky and Centro Fermi – Museo Storico della Fisica e Centro Studi e Ricerche Enrico Fermi.

Neutrons Matter was  the seventh edition of the International Workshop on Electron-volt Neutron Spectroscopy, celebrates the 85th anniversary of the discovery of the neutron by James Chadwick, and the 80th anniversary of the patent issued by the Ministero delle Corporazioni on 27th October 1937 to Enrico Fermi for the use of neutrons to enhance artificial radioactivity. The last discovery took place at the Istituto di Fisica di Via Panisperna at the very heart of Rome. Following a successful sixth edition of this workshop series in the United Kingdom in 2014, we brought to the fore and highlight the most recent (and quite exciting) advances in the field, with an emphasis on the use of the technique across condensed matter research, as well as the concurrent use of contemporary computational materials modelling.

The workshop came to an end in the magnificent garden of the palace in via Panisperna, between the water fountain that inspired Enrico Fermi to try different materials for neutron moderation, and the staircase where a total of fifteen Nobel-prize laureates were photographed during the first international conference in nuclear physics, held in Rome in October 1931.

2010 – Workshop – High energy neutrons for science and society

5th – 6th October 2010. This is the V edition of a series of workshops addressing the PERSPECTIVES IN NEUTRON SPECTROSCOPY AT HIGH ENERGIES and follows the I and II editions held at Cosener House in May 1995 and October 1998, the III edition held in Santa Fe (New Mexico, US) in April 2005, and the IV edition held in Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 2006.

2010 –  Imaging and life sciences applications of new light sources

26th March 2010 – Organized by the Italian Embassy in London in cooperation with CNR and INFN in Italy, and with the STFC and Diamond Light Source in the United Kingdom, the workshop aims to discuss the possible biological and biomedical uses of the new light sources that are under construction or being considered for construction in Italy, in the UK and in Europe.

2009 – Physical Techniques in Biomedical applications

Rome, 20th April , 2009, Italy-UK partnership in Neutron Science: Thirty Years and Beyond, Aula Fleming of the Tor Vergata Rome University.

The SYMPOSIUM has the objectives to illustrate the opportunities in biology and medicine offered by the new radiation sources based on ion beams, Free Electron Laser and neutrons, with particular attention to possible scientific and technological developments that will enable these sources and the prospects for Roman of the scientific community, national and international. In the world today thousands of researchers, research organizations, universities and industry, using synchrotron light sensor, ion and neutron to conduct frontier research and complementary, for example in the areas of environmental science, bioscience, engineering, chemical, pharmaceutical sciences, physical and geological, health sciences and materials. The emphasis of the symposium will be on the opportunities of ion probes, light and neutrons in the fields of radiotherapy and molecular diagnostics, characterization of biological systems for the phenomena that occur on the nanometer spatial scale, and time scale of femtoseconds.
